We started infrastructural development afresh because Amaechi squandered Rivers funds- Governor Wike

Monday, October 31, 2016

Rivers State Governor , Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that the administration started the process of infrastructural development afresh because the immediate past administration of Rotimi Amaechi squandered resources that accrued to the state under his eight years of misrule.
He said it was Amaechi’s eight years of misrule that made it impossible for the former governor to construct a road to the hometown of his political mentor , Chief Godspower Ake of the APC.

The governor also urged the people of Rivers State to rise up and pray to God to handle those working with outsiders to disrupt the political process and deny the Rivers people representation at the Senate.
Governor Wike spoke on Sunday during the 10th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service of the Omega Power Ministry in Port Harcourt and the Harvest Thanksgiving of Saint Luke Anglican Church , Rumuadaolu.
"Amaechi squandered the money of our people, using state resources to sponsor elections in other places. Because of the funds squandered by Amaechi, we are starting the development of statewide infrastructure afresh. For eight years, at a time that the state got approximately N20billion monthly, that administration failed to develop critical infrastructure," he said.
"G..U Ake was Amaechi’s political mentor. Yet for eight years, he denied his community the required access road. For us, we will continue to ensure the development of infrastructure in all communities of Rivers State , irrespective of the political leaning of the people ".
Speaking at the Omega Power Ministry , Governor Wike , Governor Wike said he has presented the political problem of the state before God, urging all Christians to pray fervently for the sustenance of the state .
"The same God who ensured that we overcame them in 2015, will answer our prayers"
The governor commended the General Overseer of Omega Power Ministry , Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere for his commitment to the welfare of the less privileged.

Shettima alleges some Governors of states not much affected by Boko Haram insurgency are lying to get donations from international agencies

Monday, October 31, 2016

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has said some of his colleagues in the North-east were making false claims about the situation of internally displaced persons and destruction wrecked by Boko Haram insurgents in their states.
"When it comes to goodies, you will be seeing states that suffer the least, exaggerating the sufferings inflicted on their society by Boko Haram as if such a thing is a badge of honor."
Speaking on Friday, October 28th in Government House, Maiduguri when he hosted a delegation of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), led by its deputy regional director for West and East Africa, Beatrice Mutali, Shettima said the governors were exaggerating the impact of the insurgency in their domains to rake in donations from philanthropists and international donor agencies.
The governor said his state was the epicenter of the insurgency and suffered over 80 percent of the destruction by Boko Haram, adding that he was worried that some sister states not much touched by the insurgency were allegedly lying to draw donors’ attention.
Mr. Shettima’s allegation came in the wake of the passage of a bill by the National Assembly for the establishment of the Northeast Development Commission (NDC).
The commission is expected to coordinate the rehabilitation of communities in the region devastated by the insurgency and provision of support for the victims.
Deliberation of the bill at the National Assembly featured a heated debate and other intrigues over the location of the headquarters of the proposed commission, before Maiduguri, the Borno State capital was eventually agreed on.
Ahead of the takeoff of the commission, interest groups in the region have also started jostling for positions on its board with a view to potentially influencing its activities in the areas of determination of projects and disbursement of funds.
Expressing his gratitude to the UN system for its interventions, Mr. Shettima said the state had not been getting its fair share of the supports coming from the international donor agencies because of bogus claims he said were being made by other states.
"We truly appreciate your efforts. But we really need you to step up your activities in the state because Borno, most sadly, is the nerve center of Boko Haram; but when it comes to goodies, you will be seeing states that suffer the least, exaggerating the sufferings inflicted on their society by Boko Haram as if such a thing is a badge of honor.
"To me, I am not proud to say Borno state is the nerve center of Boko Haram. But states where, one, two or three local government are occupied by Boko Haram will exaggerate it and say up to ten of their local government areas had been occupied by Boko Haram; or you hear them saying 15 local government areas were conquered by Boko Haram in Adamawa state, or in Yobe state or in Taraba state
"People are even exaggerating the numbers of IDPs they have. And mind you, if you go to Adamawa, the IDPs are from Borno state; just like if you go to Cameroon, the Nigerian refugees there, 95 percent of the IDPs are from Borno state; so also in Niger Republic. But it is not for me to say they should be denied any support.
"However any support you give us, you are just here to complement our efforts. We in Borno are very proud and self-contented people. We will never beg any organisation or group for support; rather we will implore on them on a pedestal of equality to assist our people in these our hours of need"
The governor lamented the toll of the insurgency on children and women, who constitute the most vulnerable groups in society.
"Women and children bore the brunt of this madness called Boko Haram; women are the victims of gender-based violence, and they really need psycho-social support to overcome their trauma", said Governor Shettima.
"Just a couple of weeks ago, the Nigerian military handed over to us over 500 kids and brutalized women; they were wives and kids of Boko Haram combatants. But my personal take on it is that these women and children were as much victims of Boko Haram as any other people in our community because most of them were married off to the Boko Haram members not in their own volition.
"They were literally kidnapped and held as sex slaves of Boko Haram. And the kids are utterly blameless; you cannot ostracize those kids; you cannot maltreat or profile them as Boko Haram kids so they should not have access to education and so on. After the de-radicalization programme, we are poised to see that they are reintegrated into the society, they are sufficiently empowered, and we will provide equal opportunity for the kids", the governor said.
The UNFPA team visited Mr. Shettima to present a review of the organization’s operations and interventions in the state.
"We are going to scale up our efforts in the psycho-social supports, gender based violence and humanitarian services", the leader of the delegation, Ms. Mutali said.
The UNFPA said it trained 170 health workers, 55 doctors and midwives on maternal and child healthcare in the past few months. It has also distributed 129 reproductive health kits, comprising 1,413 cartons of assorted family planning commodities, and given priority to health facilities in the state.
The UNFPA said it has also provided 32,600 dignity kits to rural women, especially young girls to restore their dignity. It said a total of 7,297 victims of Boko Haram were given psycho-social counseling as well as skills acquisition and empowerment.

$2.1b Arms deals: Dasuki intends to call former Pres. Goodluck Jonathan as witness

Monday, October 31, 2016

Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, who is currently on trial for alleged mismanagement of $2.1 billion arms funds, says he intends to invite former President Goodluck Jonathan as his witness.
Jonathan has in the past condemned the charges against Dasuki, claiming that there is no way the ex-NSA could have stolen about $2.2billion funds for arms.

Dr. Jonathan said:
“We bought warships, we bought aircraft, we bought lots of weapons for the army,” he said in a recent interview at the Oxford Union in the United Kingdom.
Speaking with The Nation correspondent, Mr. Ahmed Raji (SAN), the ex-NSA’s counsel, said Dasuki wanted Jonathan to testify in court on his behalf.
Raji said:
“It will be desirable for Jonathan to testify for the ex-NSA. It will throw greater light into grey areas. And it will serve the interest of Justice. It will be fantastic for him to go to court to testify. Dasuki is an agent of a disclosed and known principal.”
Another member of Dasuki's legal team said:
“With what Jonathan said in London, the only logical thing for him to do is to see it through.
“We want Jonathan to follow-through. If he backs out, it will be bad.” But, in Raji’s view, a political solution will be better than trial because of the “characters involved”. He said: “But, frankly speaking, I pray for a political solution to the problem because of the characters involved.xx
“Both the accused and the government should embrace a political solution to the problem.”
When asked if Dasuki was ready to proffer a political solution, he answered:
“Why not? He is. He added:
”I believe the President is very sincere. He wants to reorganise Nigeria and he deserves the support of all.
“With a political solution, Mr. President will be in good stead to overcome unnecessary distractions in order to succeed. “I pray that everybody will key into his vision and the economic challenges facing the nation.” Those point of advising a political solution is that it will not be “tidy” for Dasuki to mention all those who got money from his office. Among them, said a source, are a prominent traditional ruler in the North, who reportedly got N500 million and a former Head of State. A source, who spoke in confidence, said Dasuki’s defence team was banking on Jonathan’s testimony. The source said: “All is set for the defence of Dasuki, who is still insisting on an open trial to let Nigerians know the beneficiaries of the arms cash.
“One of those who may testify is ex-President Goodluck Jonathan whose remarks in London appeared to be the first phase of the war chest of the ex-NSA.
“You know the ex-NSA said he acted on Jonathan’s instructions in disbursing some of the cash. And from the look of things, the ex-President is now ready to accept responsibility for whatever Dasuki did.
“We believe it has reached a level that Nigerians must know what really happened, how funds were disbursed and who got what. “This is why a secret trial is not a viable option, with the way things are going.”
“So far, we have secured the consent of Jonathan to appear in court for Dasuki. This will make the trial worth it.”
Dasuki had on December 13, 2015 said he disbursed the funds on Jonathan’s instructions.

The ex-NSA said:
“I wish to state as follows: That I have been publicly indicted and any statement may jeopardise my defence. Having been briefed by the EFCC investigators on why I was invited, I will answer the charges in court. As such, I do not wish to make any further statement on the matter.
“That I am aware in November (I cannot remember the exact date), my office requested the CBN to exchange N10billion from the account of the Office of National Security Adviser domiciled in CBN. The money was exchanged at $47m and some Euros which I cannot remember. The exact amount was delivered at my residence.
“The money was for delegates that attended the nomination convention for the PDP. Presidential nomination. The money was paid and sent to Hon. (Waripamowei) Dudafa (SSAP Household) and ADC(C-I-C) for distribution on the instruction of the President.
“Based on the statement of Director of Finance and Administration (Salisu), Ibrahim Wambai, and Yazidu Ibrahim, all the cash (both foreign and local) are usually given to them for official use. “I also noted the statement of Sagir Bafarawa whose company is Dalhatu Investment in which he stated that he received the sum of N4,633,000,000 from the account of the Office of the NSA. I authorised the payment . The money was for vehicles, motorcycles for youth empowerment and women sent to Saudi Arabia. I got the proposal from the President. I do not have the proposal; it should be at the office in the Villa.”

Ben Murray-Bruce: "I'm never against loans, but they should be spent exclusively on developing Nigeria not developing our elite."

Monday, October 31, 2016

President Buhari last week forwarded a request to the National Assembly to approve external borrowing plan of $29.960 billion, in order to execute key infrastructural projects across the country between 2016 - 2018. Senator/businessman Ben-Murray Bruce reacted to this via social media, saying if the loan is at the end of the day mismanaged, the youths will not be leaders of tomorrow but future debtors. In his words:

I'm never against taken loans, but they should be spent exclusively on developing Nigeria not developing our elite. We are being told what FG plans to spend the loan on, but how much of those expenditures affect the youths? People of my age won't be the ones to repay this loan. Its the youth who will, repay, so it must benefit them, not us.

We elders must have a rethink. We must think of our youth and ways to bequeath assets to them, not liabilities. Elected officials still earn ridiculously high salaries in the midst of poverty. Let's address that before we borrow. Elected officials still move about in 10-20 car convoys costing hundreds of millions. Let's fix that before borrowing.

We want to borrow $29 billion for our youth to repay back yet not one youth is in the Federal Executive Council. We have not implemented the Orosanye Report and we want to borrow? It will be like pouring water into a basket. Before we pile on debt that our youth will have to repay lets at least plug all areas of waste in our government.

If we don't do the right thing, this loan will turn our youths from leaders of tomorrow to debtors of tomorrow!

Young man puts bleach in his pregnant girlfriend's water bottle in order to kill unwanted two-month-old fetus

Monday, October 31, 2016

20 year old Theophilous Washington, a student of Millersville University in rural Pennsylvania, was charged with attempted murder after authorities in the school learnt that he poisoned his pregnant girlfriend's glass of water with bleach in an attempt to abort the 2-months pregnancy his girlfriend was carrying.

Washington and his pregnant girlfriend, also a student, were at his home on Thursday and Friday  when he offered her a drink of water that had been stashed in the refrigerator.

After she drank the water, she returned to her room and began to feel a burning sensation in her throat; she started vomiting and eventually called 911 where it was revealed that she had been poisoned.

Washington has been charged with criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder of an unborn child and reckless endangering. He is now in custody on $1million bail pending a November 4 preliminary hearing. He faces up to 10 years in prison...
