Pope appeals for urgent food aid for famine-stricken South Sudan

Thursday, 23 February 2017

Pope Francis has called for urgent humanitarian aid for the starving people of South Sudan, saying millions risked being 'condemned to death' by a famine in parts of the war-ravaged country. This comes after UN aid agencies had declared that famine in South Sudan has left 100,000 people on the verge of starvation and almost 5 million people, more than 40% of the country's population, in need of urgent help.
In his weekly audience, where he spoke to thousands of people at the St.Peter's Square, today, February 22, 2017, the holy father said:
'Now more than ever there should be a commitment by everyone to not just talk but contribute food aid and allow it to reach suffering populations.'
He said millions of people, including many children, were being 'condemned to death by hunger' and they should be urgently helped.
