Libby Appleby, 37, from County Durham and her husband,
Tafadzwa Madzimbamuto, 40 from Zimbabwean were surprised when their
babies were born with different skin tones. While Amelia was born with
dark skin, black hair and
brown eyes, her sister Jasmine was born with fair skin, blue eyes and
light
curls.
"We get a lot of funny looks when we tell people the girls are actually identical," she said.
Despite their different skin tones, they are genetically identical and are thought to be the first of their kind in the country.
"When they were born, we were flabbergasted. They look like
they're different races. Amelia is the spitting image of her dad, while
Jasmine is a mini version of me." Libby said.
Libby
said strangers mistake the one-year-old twins for step-sisters. The
couple have been together for three years, when she found out she was
pregnant in June 2014.
Three
months later, they were told they were expecting twins and medics at
University of Durham Hospital warned they would be difficult to tell
apart. Libby said medics were shocked when they delivered the girls -
who are monozygotic - formed in the same embryo but developed in
separate sacs.
"We put them next to each other
in a cot and couldn't believe how different they were. Doctors told us
the chances of mixed race identical twins are one in a million. We were
thrilled they were so unique."
A sample of Appleby's placenta confirmed the twins are 100% genetically identical, despite them looking nothing alike.
Dr
Claire Steves, from the Department of Twin Research, said multiple
genes control skin colour and although identical twins are very likely
to share them completely, it is not definite.

They tried to negotaite with the shooter for about 3 hours, then gave up and called the SWAT team who burts into the home and found bodies littered all over the home.
A 12-year-old girl related to the victims survived and was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, Mason County sheriff's Chief Deputy Ryan Spurling said. Her condition was not immediately known.
"Apparently she's OK," Spurling said. "I don't know if this is a daughter, or step-daughter, or what the relationship is, but she escaped from the house."The gunman "apparently came outside the home and shot himself," Sheriff Casey Salisbury said. "It's a terrible tragedy."
Neither the gunman nor his four victims have been identified.
A neighbour said the couple had been married for about four to five years and lived with 3 adopted children, 2 from Russia and 1 from China. He also said that the husband had recently been hospitalized and was on a lot of medications.
The neighbor also said it was common for the family to do shooting practice and that's what he thought of when he heard the gunfire.
"I was getting a load of wood into the house, and I hear some gunshots," he said. "Four or five, a pause and then another round."
"It's actually really scary because when you live out like this, you want to feel like your neighbors are someone you can rely on, not somebody you have to be afraid of because we are out in a secluded area," said another neighbor, Lynn Johnson.

She jokingly said she is neither married nor pregnant, because her boyfriend, Tyga was slacking.
Kylie who was make-up free for the video, said she wanted to play 'addressing rumors with Tyga and Kylie.'
'Are you pregnant? I think we need to
address that rumor because I feel like everybody thinks you're
pregnant,' Tyga added, also bringing up marriage rumors.
After clarifying that she was not married or pregnant, Kylie explained:
'Because I'm a f***ing infant child and I don't want to be married or have a baby right now!'
Tyga corrected her, saying that she was a 'young woman that's very focused,' but Kylie insisted that she was 'a baby.'
