Barely 24 hours after some suspected
secret cult members killed 16 persons in Ahoada West Local Government
Area of Rivers State, a group of gunmen have again stormed another
community in the state, killing three persons.
The gunmen were said to have invaded Isiokpo community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state and set some houses ablaze.
The incident, according to an eyewitness, happened at about 8pm on Thursday, leaving many indigenes scampering for safety.
It was learnt that the assailants wore
military uniform, a development that made it difficult for the residents
to immediately notice that they were attackers.
It was also gathered that the attack on
Isiokpo community could be a reprisal on the killing of one Ebubedike
Wabali, who was found dead in the bush after being kidnapped by unknown
gunmen.
An indigene, who identified himself as
Kingsley, said business owners closed their shops after the incident as
many were still afraid that the assailants could still come back to the
community to unleash more attacks.
“We are still shocked over the incident.
Many indigenes of the community have left to neighbouring communities
to avoid being killed. We call on security agencies to come to save us,”
Kingsley said.
The police spokesperson, Mr. Ahmad
Mohammad, confirmed the incident, but added that the details at his
disposal were still sketchy.
